Viswanathan Anand is an Indian chess grandmaster, the world chess champion. He held the FIDE World chess championship from 2000 to 2002, at a time when the world title was split. He became the World Champion in 2007. He successfully won the title of World Chess Championship in 2010. He is one of the players in history to break the 2800 mark on the FIDE rating list. In 2007, he became the world number one for the first time.
He became India’s first grandmaster in 1987. He was also the first person to receive the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in 1992, which is considered as India’s highest sporting honor. In 2007, he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second highest civilian award, making him the first sportsperson to receive the award in Indian history. He has been described as most versatile world champion, since he is the only player to won world chess championships in different formats including Knockout, Tournament, Match, Rapid and Blitz.
