Indian Elephant: One of the Largest Mammals in the World

The Indian Elephant is one of the three recognized subspecies of the Asian elephant, native to mainland Asia. Since 1986, Elephants has been listed as endangered by IUCN as the population has declined by at least 50% over the last three generations, estimated to be 60-75 years. The species is pre-eminently threatened by habitat loss, degradation and fragmentation.

The Indian elephant has been tamed and worked by people for more than 4,000 years. They can easily move through swamps or climb mountainous terrain that is too difficult for a horse. Their free movement is impeded by reservoirs, hydroelectric projects and associated canals, irrigation dams, highways, railway lines, mining and industrial development.
