Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi: Bapu of India

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi: An Ideological Leader of India

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was an ideological leader of India during the Independence movement of India. He pioneered satyagraha, resistance to dictatorship through mass civil resistance. He firmly believed in nonviolence. His methods and leadership helped India gain independence and inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world.

He is often referred to as Mahatma. He organized protests by farmers and urban laborers concerning excessive land tax and discrimination. Above all, he aimed to achieve the independence of India from foreign domination. He lived very modestly in a self sufficient residential community. He ate simple vegetarian food, experimented for a time with a fruitarian diet, and undertook long fasts as a means of both self purification and social protest.
