What is Makar Sankranti?

Makara Sankranti is a Hindu festival which is celebrated to mark the transition of the Sun from Sagittarius to Capricorn during the winter solstice in the northern hemisphere. On every 12 years of time period the famous Kumbh Mela is also held during the time period of this festival, Hindus gather in large number to take a holy dip at Ganga Sagar on this day every year.
